Garage door lift cables work alongside the springs, running from the bottom corners of the garage door up over the cable drums mounted on the torsion bar. They carry real load with every cycle, and when one snaps — or comes loose and tangles on the drum — the garage door loses support unevenly on one side.
The telltale signs: the garage door looks crooked or lopsided when partly open, one side hangs lower than the other, or the garage door has come fully off its track. Cables often fail at the same time as a spring, since a sudden release of tension is exactly the kind of shock that snaps an already-worn cable.

Fraying & Rust

Cable Drum Issues

If a Cable Has Snapped, Don't Do This.
Don't run the opener. An unevenly supported garage door can come further off-track or drop suddenly if forced.
Don't try to push the garage door back onto its track yourself. Off-track garage doors and their rollers are under tension and can shift unexpectedly.
Don't replace just the snapped cable yourself. Working near a loaded spring and drum system without the right tools is genuinely dangerous.
Do leave the garage door exactly where it is and call a technician. Most cable repairs are completed same day.
