Off-Track Garage Door Realignment
Problem Overview

Garage door lift cables work alongside the springs, running from the bottom corners of the garage door up over the cable drums mounted on the torsion bar. They carry real load with every cycle, and when one snaps — or comes loose and tangles on the drum — the garage door loses support unevenly on one side.

The telltale signs: the garage door looks crooked or lopsided when partly open, one side hangs lower than the other, or the garage door has come fully off its track. Cables often fail at the same time as a spring, since a sudden release of tension is exactly the kind of shock that snaps an already-worn cable.

Common Causes

Why Cables Snap or Tangle.

Cables rarely fail in isolation — these are the patterns we see most often.

Fraying & Rust

Cables wear and corrode with age, especially in Metro Vancouver's damp climate. Frayed strands are a visible warning sign before a full snap.

Spring Failure Shock

A spring releasing its tension suddenly puts a shock load through the cables. An already-worn cable often snaps at the same moment as the spring.

Cable Drum Issues

If a cable slips off its drum rather than snapping, it can wind unevenly or jam — pulling the garage door off-track without any cable actually breaking.

Safety First

If a Cable Has Snapped, Don't Do This.

Don't run the opener. An unevenly supported garage door can come further off-track or drop suddenly if forced.

Don't try to push the garage door back onto its track yourself. Off-track garage doors and their rollers are under tension and can shift unexpectedly.

Don't replace just the snapped cable yourself. Working near a loaded spring and drum system without the right tools is genuinely dangerous.

Do leave the garage door exactly where it is and call a technician. Most cable repairs are completed same day.

Repair Solutions

How We Fix It.

Every visit starts with a full diagnosis — cables, drums, rollers, and tracks — before we quote the job.

Cable Replacement (Pair)

Both cables replaced together so the garage door stays balanced — replacing only the broken one leaves a mismatched pair and an early second failure.

Cable Drum Service

Drums inspected and replaced if cracked or worn, with cables re-wound evenly so the garage door tracks straight on both sides.

Off-Track Realignment

If the garage door has come off its rail, we realign the track, check rollers and brackets, and verify balance before the garage door goes back into service.

Request an Assessment
No. A snapped cable often means the garage door is unevenly supported or already off-track. Operating it can cause the garage door to drop suddenly or jump the tracks further. Leave it closed and call a technician.
Not recommended. With a cable snapped, the garage door can be unbalanced or partially off-track, and manual force can make it worse or cause it to fall. Leave the garage door as-is until a technician arrives.
Usually urgent rather than a true emergency, unless the garage door has come off-track entirely or a vehicle is trapped inside. We dispatch same-day across Metro Vancouver during business hours for these calls.
Most cable replacements take 1–2 hours, including inspecting the drums and rollers and rebalancing the garage door. Off-track realignment can take longer depending on the extent of the damage.
Always in pairs. Cables wear at similar rates, and replacing only the broken one leaves a mismatched pair that causes uneven operation and an early second failure.
