The type of noise is a real diagnostic clue. Squeaking usually means dry metal-on-metal contact at the hinges or rollers. Grinding points to a worn roller bearing or debris in the track. A Few Things to Know Before You DIY It.
Don't use WD-40 on springs or rollers. It strips the protective coating and attracts more dust over time — use a garage-door-specific lubricant.
Don't tighten hardware near the springs yourself without knowing which bolts are load-bearing — some are part of the spring anchor system.
Don't ignore a new banging or popping sound. It's the one noise type that can signal something more serious than wear.
Do book a tune-up once the noise becomes consistent — it's far cheaper than waiting for the worn part to fail outright.
