An opener that's "not working" can mean several different failures, and they call for different fixes. The most telling symptom is whether the motor runs at all. If it's completely silent, the issue is usually power, the logic board, or the remote/wall control. If you hear the motor running but the garage door doesn't move, the opener itself is fine — the drive mechanism connecting it to the garage door has failed.
Garage door openers use one of three drive systems — chain, belt, or screw drive (or a jackshaft mount for low-headroom garages) — and each has its own common failure points. A proper diagnosis checks the logic board, the drive system, and the remote/sensor chain before recommending a repair or a replacement.
Why Openers Stop Working.
Most residential openers last 10–15 years. These are the failures we see most often before and after that point.
Logic Board Failure
Power surges, age, and humidity all take a toll on the opener's control board. A failing board can cause erratic behaviour, total non-response, or random reversing.
Worn Drive Components
Chains stretch, belts crack, and drive screws wear. Eventually the motor spins but can't transmit force to the garage door — the most common reason for "runs but doesn't move."
Remote or Sensor Faults
A dead remote battery, a lost wireless code, or a misaligned safety sensor can look exactly like a dead opener — but the motor and drive are completely fine.
If Your Opener Has Stopped Responding, Don't Do This.
Don't keep forcing the motor. If the garage door is jammed and the motor keeps trying, you risk burning it out or stripping the drive gear.
Don't assume it's the remote without testing the wall control too. Replacing remote batteries when the fault is electrical wastes time on the wrong fix.
Don't open the opener housing yourself. Internal components can retain stored energy, and DIY repairs often void what's left of the warranty.
Do try manual release if you need the garage door open right away — pull the emergency cord and lift carefully, then leave it disconnected until we arrive.
