A broken garage door spring is one of the most common — and most unmistakable — garage door failures. Most homeowners hear it before they see it: a loud bang from the garage, often overnight, followed by a garage door that won't lift more than a few inches, or one that suddenly feels far too heavy to move by hand.
Residential garage doors use either a torsion spring (mounted horizontally above the garage door, twisting to store energy) or a pair of extension springs (mounted along the upper tracks, stretching under tension). Either type does the same job — counterbalancing 100 to 300 lbs of garage door weight so the opener only has to manage a small fraction of that load. When the spring fails, the opener is suddenly working against dead weight it was never built to handle.
Why Springs Fail.
Most residential springs are rated for around 10,000 open/close cycles — roughly seven years at four uses a day. These factors move that timeline up.
Cycle Fatigue
Every open and close cycle uses up a small amount of the spring's rated life. High-use garage doors — strata buildings, rentals, daily-driver garages — reach end-of-life years earlier than the rated estimate.
Coastal Moisture & Rust
Metro Vancouver's humidity works into the coil over time, weakening the metal from the inside. A rusted spring can fail well before it reaches its expected cycle count.
Worn Center Bearings
The bearings the torsion bar spins on wear down with use. A seized or worn bearing puts extra strain on the spring and accelerates failure — often the hidden cause behind a "premature" break.
If Your Spring Has Broken, Don't Do This.
Don't keep running the opener. Forcing the motor to lift a garage door without spring support can burn it out or strip the gears.
Don't try to lift it manually. A garage door without spring tension is dead weight — typically 150–300 lbs — and can drop suddenly.
Don't attempt a DIY spring swap. A wound torsion spring stores 150–300 ft-lbs of torque. This is one of the few home repairs where professional service is the unambiguous right call.
Do leave the garage door closed and call a technician. Most spring replacements are completed same day.
